Trunk-or-Treat?! What’s that??

Trick or treat! Halloween will be here before you know it! I remember spending hours walking around my neighborhood on Halloween. Usually, about 1/3 of the doors my brother and I knocked on were not answered or were too creepy to even consider knocking. I’ll never forget, one house, around the corner from where we lived, had a doormat that said “go away.” We walked up that long driveway only to find that angry doormat. I’m sure other kids knocked, but I took it as a sign that the owners of that house were not interested in handing out candy. Who knows why some homeowners did not answer their doors, but I can certainly tell you that it was a let down to spend that time walking up to the door only to return to the sidewalk with the same amount of candy we started with. (First world problems, I know) After walking all around the neighborhood, we would return home exhausted & hungry, and often in the dark, to go through the contents of our pillowcase.
These days, however, Trunk-or-Treat events are becoming more and more popular. What’s a Trunk-or-Treat event, you ask? Instead of walking around the entire neighborhood, Trunk-or-Treat events are usually held in public or business parking lots. Cars from local families and businesses decorate their trunks and hand out candy to costumed children that attend. Children walk from car to car and get a piece of candy from each trunk; no unanswered doors, no tears, plenty of candy. In addition to being able to trick-or-treat quickly, I love taking my children to Trunk-or-Treat events because, honestly, they are safer than walking through neighborhoods in the dark. You don’t have to worry about cars speeding down a street you’re crossing or walking down streets that aren’t well-lit.
All in all, Trunk-or-Treat events are so much fun! If not an alternate to the traditional trick-or-treating, it’s a great addition to Halloween Fun. (um, hello…are you going to say “no” to more candy?? I didn’t think so.)
