Looking to introduce your kids to the latest pretend play exhibit in South Jersey? Head on over to the Garden State Discovery Museum, in Cherry Hill, to check out their new Bank of America exhibit: Savings Makes Cents. While I LOVE a good play on words, I love an opportunity to teach my kids through hands-on pretend play even more. Whether that’s the mom in me or the veteran special education teacher in me, who knows, but I do know that this is a pretty special exhibit.

Designed to look like a pint-sized Bank of America location, the Savings Makes Cents exhibit aims to introduce kids to financial literacy through their interactive stations throughout the entire exhibit.

When you view the mural, you may notice that the view outside the “windows” is pretty accurate! You can even “see” the California Pizza Kitchen Exhibit and the Subaru exhibit as if they were actual locations. Pretty cool! I totally appreciate that attention to detail.

As for the financial aspects of the exhibit, there are plenty! An interactive ATM machine encourages simple multiplication and division skills and a coin sorting station promotes visual recognition of coins and helps kids to learn the various sizing of the coins. Walk on over to the teller’s station and kids can play math games on one of the two tablets and sort paper money. A few steps over, kids can enter the bank vault! Complete with a clicking vault handle, the vault houses safety-deposit boxes that double as a simple memory game! It’s all so much fun and, like so many of the Garden State Discovery Museum, appropriate for a range of ages.

Dates for these trainings will be posted on the Garden State Discovery Museum website and Facebook Page.

If you’re looking for more activities to teach your kids about budgeting and financial literacy, Bank of America has some interactive lessons available for kids (and, to be honest, I’m sure they could be beneficial for adults, too!).

Let us know if you’ve visited this new exhibit yet and what you think! The Garden State Discovery Museum is one of my kids favorite places to go – we even had a birthday party there recently!
